The Walk Creative Art Foundation, now encompassing West Nile, Acholi, Lango, and Karamoja, officially launched its Gulu City office on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards uniting the region’s creative arts industry.
Chairperson Solomon Aboda, a prominent music and talent promoter, expressed gratitude to the technical committee for their tireless efforts in bringing together artists from across Northern Uganda.
“People thought this was impossible,” Aboda said, “but we are here, and going far.”
Support for the initiative poured in from various quarters. The Prime Minister of Ker Kwaro Acholi, Michael Otim, pledged the chiefdom’s solidarity and welcomed Operation Wealth Creation’s support for the region’s creative talent.
The Acholi Cultural Institution demonstrated its commitment by presenting a symbolic cheque of sh2m to the Walk committee.
Former Gender Minister, Zoe Bakoko, emphasised the importance of peace and unity among artists, urging them to avoid internal conflicts driven by greed.
Phina Mugerwa, Vice Chairperson of the Uganda National Cultural Center (UNCC), recognised the historical disunity within the Northern Ugandan entertainment industry.
The UNCC demonstrated its support by also presenting a cheque of sh10m to the Walk Foundation.
Sylvia Owori, Director of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting the creative arts in Northern Uganda.
“We will support the Walk by exporting your music internationally,” she added, emphasising the creation of cooperatives that will encompass various creative sectors, from filmmakers and craftsmen to fashion designers and writers.
Legendary singer Tempra Omona urged fellow creatives to embrace the opportunity and demonstrate their commitment while stressing the importance of unity.
The Walk Foundation aims to empower and connect artists across Northern Uganda, fostering talent development, promotion, and resource mobilisation to enhance the financial well-being of its members.
