Buliisa, Nwoya PLE first grade girls get scholarships

Twenty schoolgirls who got first grades in the 2022 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) in the districts of Buliisa and Nwoya have received scholarships.

On Wednesday, February 15, the beneficiaries from Buliisa were given scholastic materials at the district local government headquarters by TotalEnergies EP Uganda, the Ordinary (O) Level Education girls programme funders and one of the oil firms licensed by the government to operate Tilenga oil field.

This followed a selection exercise that was conducted in partnership with St. Andrea Kaahwa’s College, Hoima and Sacred Heart Secondary School, Gulu in collaboration with the respective district education departments.

The scholarships are merit-based, and the primary eligibility criteria was the candidate’s academic performance in PLE.

They will be supported to study in partner aforementioned partner secondary schools that have a track record of excellence.

Fred Lukumu, Buliisa district urged parents to support the education of their girl children by advising them to focus on studies and not drop out of school and ruin their future.

Caroline Namyalo, the in charge of Corporate Social Responsibility strategy and implementation at TotalEnergies EP Uganda, said they started awarding scholarships in 2013 after realising that schoolgirls were disadvantaged to achieve education.

She said some of the pioneer beneficiaries have successfully completed their studies and are working with reputable organisations and contributing to sustainable development of the country.

“The scholarship programmes are part of the oil firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility, and they resonate with the company’s foundation pillar of Education and Inclusion, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on quality education, gender equality, and reduced inequalities,” Namyalo added.

Sadam Rugadya, a parent, hailed the oil firm for the scholarship and scholastics, adding that although they performed well they are too poor to afford quality education and in excelling schools.
