The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Limited, has embarked on offering skills training to young people through a vocational training programme.
The programme which was launched on February 28 in Hoima City, will be implemented at selected institutions Hoima and Masaka as part of the livelihood restoration package of eligible project affected households along the pipeline districts.
This is hoped to increase their opportunities to restore and improve their livelihood and to set up and or grow new enterprises, thereby increasing their incomes.
The short-term (three-months) vocational courses will be given to two youth in each of the eligible households.
The courses will include fashion and design, catering, driving, motor vehicle and motorcycle mechanics, hair dressing, tailoring and garmet design, welding, plumbing, electrical installation, building and construction, video and photography, computer and secretarial studies.
The said training will start with 181 youth from the households whose land will be taken to construct a 1,443 kilometres long heated pipeline which will transport crude oil from Hoima district to Tanga Port in Tanzania.
These will receive training from St. Charles Lwanga in Butende in Masaka district, Mummy’s Institute of Beauty Design and Commerce studies, also in Masaka, St. Simon Peters Vocational Centre in Hoima and St. Peters Vocational training institute in Mubende.
John Bosco Habumugisha, the deputy EACOP Limited Deputy Director, said: “We believe that equipping these youth with appropriate skills will provide them an opportunity to increase their capacity to start their own enterprises to enhance their household incomes.”
In collaboration with the contractor (Montrose) will support beneficiaries with tuition, scholastic materials, and starter pack after completion.
